PROJECT BASED LEARNING

First Quarter Project-What's in Our Name?

Picture
Key skills students will learn in this project.

1.  Recognize upper and lower case alphabet.
2.  Be able to write first name without help.
3.  Recognize, write, and count with one-to-one correspondence, numbers to 10.
4.  Identify, sort, and classify objects.
5.  Identify basic colors and shapes.
6.  Verbally describe at least one way their names connect them to their world.
Assessment of these skills will be through oral, informal, formal and summative assessments.  Students will present a name book with each letter of their name and describe to peers, parents and teacher what they know about the letters in their name and why their name is important to them.
Experts involved in the project included parents, teachers and peers.  The students will take a trip to the post office and will speak to a worker about how names on a letter help them arrive at the correction destination.  The WOW factor is that the students take pride, ownership, and learn that their names are part of who they are as individuals and connect them to their world.
