Connecting students' prior knowledge with learning goals.

This year in Kindergarten we began our name project with a discussion about each student's name and how it connected them to the world.  We discovered that their name was important to them so they could find their name tags at their seats, find their lunches and their name tags.

Using a variety of instructional strategies and resources.

Instructional strategies include realia, visuals, songs, dance, hands on projects total physical response and art. There are strategies that are constantly ongoing in Kindergarten.

Facilitating learning experiences that promote autonomy.

In kindergarten the goal is for them to be independent learners.  When a concept is introduced I will first model, then guided practice and assessment takes place as students complete the task independently.

Engaging students in problem solving and making subject matter meaningful.

It is important for students to know how to recognize, spell and write their name because it connects them to the world around them in a variety of ways.

Promoting self directed, reflective learning for all students

When the students finished their name books, they were given the opportunity to share their work with peers, and family, formally and informally.  They reflected on what they had learned and why it was important to them.
